Buying the right home goes far beyond the home itself. We were very lucky to buy a home we liked and stumbled upon a wonderful neighborhood as well. Looking at my own experience I have created a list of the five biggest benefits of my neighborhood and why I’ve liked it so much after all these years.
1. Proximity to day to day amenities
Once you get past the new home excitement what matters is how convenient it is to do your day to day routine. I lucked out since there are two small but nice shopping centers within walking distance of my home. It’s so convenient to be able to run to the supermarket, pharmacy or do general shopping without having to go very far.
Our street is entirely residential but having the shopping centers around the corner gives us the best of both worlds.
2. Proximity to all forms for transportation
Everyone has somewhere to go and our house is near to all forms of transportation in our area. We are near two major highways and a major train station. Whether I am traveling by car or train I can easily get to where I need to go. Again, I did not plan this years ago I just lucked out but it has been a major time saving benefit through the years.
3. Proximity to high quality schools
Not having to drive children miles to school saved us so much time. Depending on where you live, this can also involve significant traffic which adds up day after day. Our elementary school was around the block, the middle school was a mile away and the high school was only a mile further. Throughout the country many school districts are drawing from large areas which makes for a long commute but thankfully our neighborhood did not do this. I am certain that it also made the education experience better as well since children do not have their days made even longer through commuting.
4. Proximity to leisure activities
Our town has numerous parks, sports fields and playgrounds that are all within walking distance of my home. With only a short drive I can access a swimming pool, ice skating rink and bicycle paths. If you live an active lifestyle these amenities are vital and can also save you the cost of a pricey gym membership. None of this was on my radar when we bought the house, but looking back it definitely should have been.
5. Proximity to houses of worship
My neighborhood has houses of worship for various religions and it is wonderful that we have denominations of various faiths and everyone is able to coexist. I find it comforting to know my community is able to support these multiple institutions. To my way of thinking this reflects on the character of the neighborhood which is one of supporting our neighborhood in both morality and quality of life.
I am truly blessed in the neighborhood I chose to live in. I struck gold purely by chance. The purpose of this article was to provide you insight into my thought process looking at a neighborhood that I have happily called home for many years.
