It seems as though the whole world got married over the past six months since so many weddings were postponed or cancelled due to the pandemic. As the world has slowly returned to normal, so has the standard life plan of getting married then buying a home together. Here are our five most important tips for when you and your spouse buy that first home together.

Tip #1- Only do essential renovations when you move in

Don’t rush to do renovations unless you absolutely need to! Aside from a brand new home, there will be some things about your new home that you want to change – but we implore you not rush into major renovations. You must live in a home for some time before you know exactly how you want the renovations to be done. Even if you think you know how you want your new kitchen to be laid out, trust us, use the current kitchen for a month or two because once you do your ideas may change on what you previously had planned.

After that big wedding, you’re probably low on funds and patience so just enjoy the home as is for a couple of months then you can do all the work your heart desires!

Tip #2- Go furniture shopping together

Your significant other, the one that likes furniture shopping, will appreciate your presence at “dreaded” furniture shopping trips. Even if you’re not a shopping person, furniture shopping is the most important shopping trip that you will take part in because it’s things you will actually use for years to come. If you do not go, aside from annoying your new husband/wife you may wind up with a couch that you do not find comfortable or dining room chairs with a hard back that look really fancy but will drive you crazy for the next 15 years on Christmas day.

Just like getting married, furniture is a long term commitment so take part in the process of acquiring it!

Tip #3- Hire a good landscaper (assuming you moved to the suburbs)

Yes, you can do the landscaping yourself, but it is time consuming and the professionals will almost certainly do it better than you. It doesn’t matter how nice your home is on the inside – you need a well-kept lawn to complete your home. We have seen too many homeowners attempt to manage the lawn themselves then they wake up one morning and it is completely brown. At that point they call a landscaper who charges them a lot of money to fix it then gets them on the weekly plan. Avoid the fix up charge and just let them do it from day one. Landscaping isn’t cheap but if you shop around it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg.

Tip #4- Spend most of your furniture budget on a nice living room as that is where you will spend most of your time.

The kitchen will be the most used room in your house but a kitchen doesn’t require much furniture so you’re in luck there. The room that does need furniture and is extremely important to get right is the living room. You just got married, so presumably you spend a lot of time together and this is where a great living room comes in. You can spend a lot of money on fancy bedroom furniture sets, but please do us a favor and save money there to put towards your living room.

P.S. Buy yourself a great mattress! Don’t splurge those fancy nightstands, dressers, mirrors, lamps, etc just yet. You can do that in a few years!

Tip #5- Take pride in your home and enjoy it. It’s yours and it doesn’t matter how much it cost.

We’re very active on Reddit (you’ve probably seen us in your favorite home subreddit!) and it makes us very upset when people complain about their homes or that they don’t have enough money to make it exactly how they want.

The bottom line is simple: if you own a home, take pride in the fact that it is yours. The internet can make it seem as though everyone is living in a very expensive, fully renovated home that they spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to renovate, but this is so far from the truth.

We all like looking at home posts across social media for inspiration but don’t let it bring you down. In reality a great deal of what you see online can be replicated for cheaper than it appears. Of course that beautiful kitchen that someone on Instagram just did with appliances and custom cabinets does in fact cost a lot of money. But, if you are budgeting to renovate your kitchen, you can most definitely find stylish cabinets and a beautiful stainless steel oven that is similar and looks just as nice.

This post is about newlyweds moving into a new home but the ethos applies to everyone. Use our tips to make your space the best it can be and save a few bucks along the way by doing a little bit of planning with how you tackle the projects in your new home.
